Count Amadeo
Preziosi
An artist’s journey
from Istanbul
to London, 1855
The Album by Count Amadeo Preziosi, related to his journey from Istanbul to London, is singular in its depiction of Turkey within a larger geography including Malta, Italy, France and England.
In the foreword to the book, historian İlber Ortaylı writes about the Maltese-Italian Count: “It is obvious that he observed Turkey not as a foreigner but as someone who held this country close to his heart … Preziosi sought to love this country with its very unique colours instead of orientalist exaggerations.”
